CHOOSING YOUR FIRST CRUISE
Holland America Line: a cruise with room to slow down
If a good day at sea sounds like breakfast without rushing, time looking out over the water and an evening with music or a show, Holland America deserves a place on your shortlist. It is worth considering when the places you visit matter as much as the ship.
The useful question is whether you want a cruise built around the destination and a comfortable onboard routine. Compare the sailing you are actually considering, rather than deciding from the line’s reputation alone.

Is Holland America Line a good fit for you?
Worth considering if…
- You enjoy port days, scenery and learning a little about the places you visit.
- A leisurely meal, live music and a comfortable lounge sound like a good evening.
- You prefer a manageable list of onboard options to a vacation built around thrill attractions.
Think through the trade-offs
- A quieter style may not suit a group expecting a constant festival atmosphere.
- Entertainment venues and dining choices differ across the fleet.
- A fare promotion needs a careful comparison with what you would otherwise purchase.
What to expect onboard
Holland America offers activities such as destination talks, trivia, creative sessions and sports, alongside pools, fitness facilities and evening entertainment. You can make the day as full as you like, but there is no need to attend everything. A little time with the daily schedule is usually enough to find what interests you.
This is a practical option to compare if you want the ship to be a comfortable part of the trip rather than its only attraction. If your traveling companions want very different things, talk through a typical sea day before booking.
The ship still changes the experience
Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam are Pinnacle Class ships. Other choices include Signature Class ships such as Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam, Vista Class ships, and the smaller R Class pair, Volendam and Zaandam. Their layouts and venue selections are not interchangeable.
Compare the deck plan, the distance from your cabin to the places you will use and the specific evening venues. A ship’s class can help narrow the choices, but it does not tell you everything about a particular sailing.
Dining without making every meal an upgrade
The Dining Room and Lido Market give you included meal choices. Specialty restaurants give you additional options at an extra cost, with availability varying by ship. Look at the dining list before buying a package so you know which meals you already have covered.
If you like trying one special dinner, budget for that instead of assuming you need a restaurant upgrade every night. Our Cruise Dining Guide explains the broader differences between included and specialty meals.
Families can sail here, too
Holland America is not an adults-only line. Its Kids Club programs serve eligible children and teens ages 3–17, but families need to check the particular voyage. The line says these programs are not offered on cruises of 25 days or longer, including Legendary and Grand Voyages.
Do not assume a kids program replaces all of your childcare planning. Confirm eligibility, the daily schedule and supervision arrangements before booking. Choose the itinerary with your children’s interests in mind, too.
Compare the trip cost you will actually pay
Start with the cabin fare and then check gratuities, drinks, internet, excursions and any specialty dining you want. If a package is offered, compare its inclusions with your real plans rather than valuing every benefit as if you would buy it separately.
For an itinerary with several big port days, transport and excursions may affect your total more than onboard upgrades. Leave room in the budget for the parts of the trip that made you choose the destination.
Before you book
A few practical checks make it easier to compare the cruise you will actually take.
- Read the itinerary for port time and scenic cruising days.
- Check the ship’s actual dining and entertainment venues.
- Review your cabin’s position and walking distances.
- Confirm youth-program availability if traveling with children.
- Compare package benefits with what you expect to use.
Common questions
Is Holland America only for older travelers?
No. The better question is whether its onboard choices and itinerary fit your group. Families, couples and friends can all prefer a cruise with more time for dining, scenery and destination experiences.
Will every ship have the same music venues?
No. Check the entertainment list for your specific ship. A favorite venue seen in a review of one ship may not be on another.
Is this a good choice for a first Alaska cruise?
It is worth comparing if scenery and ports are your priorities. Check the actual route, glacier-viewing schedule and time ashore, then compare the cabin and total trip cost with other sailings.
